The different levels of autonomous driving according SAE J3016

SYSIOPEYA LTD can provide experience with projects supporting autonomous driving (especially safety according ISO26262).

SAE International’s standard J3016 defines six levels of driving automation, ranging from no automation to full automation:

Level 0: No Automation The driver is in complete control of the vehicle at all times, and there is no automated assistance for driving tasks.

Level 1: Driver Assistance The vehicle can assist with one or more specific driving tasks, such as steering or braking, but the driver is still responsible for monitoring the driving environment and taking control of the vehicle when necessary.

Level 2: Partial Automation The vehicle can assist with multiple driving tasks simultaneously, such as steering and acceleration, but the driver must remain engaged and monitor the driving environment at all times.

Level 3: Conditional Automation The vehicle can perform all driving tasks under certain conditions, but the driver must be ready to take control of the vehicle when prompted by the system.

Level 4: High Automation The vehicle can perform all driving tasks under certain conditions and does not require human intervention, but the system has limitations and may require the driver to take control of the vehicle in certain situations.

Level 5: Full Automation The vehicle can perform all driving tasks under all conditions, and there is no need for a human driver.
